We had a great turnout for Robert Todd's full day seminar, and he was "on" for the event. We even had some students, who had only planned to attend the morning session, cancel their other afternoon plans so they could attend the rest of the day.
Robert Todd presides over a bridge seminar at the Pasadena Bridge Club
Our next round of bridge courses are posted on the web site. We'll have a full slate on Wednesday afternoons, Wednesday evenings, and Thursday evenings. Check them out here! Full information in an email next week.
Bridge Basics 1 - Introduction starts Thursday evenings, April 2. Pass along the link to your non-bridge playing friends!
Bridgemate III tryout
I had Bridgemate send me ten of the new Bridgemate III devices to try out at the bridge club. If you open your ACBL Bulletin for this month, you'll see their ad with Baron Barclay on the inside cover.
The new machines are attractive with a full-color touch screen. Player name and number lookup is a big improvement. There's a lot more information for ranking at the end of the game. They take a little more table space, but having our corner tables can help with that.
For big games, we can still mix-and-match the older Bridgemate II machines. If we like them I'll make sure we have enough on hand.
We haven't decided to keep them yet, so give them a workout and let me know what you think!
Logo wear
Someone at the club noticed one of my stylish "Pasadena Bridge Club" polo shirts and asked where they might get one.
Surprise! We have a full catalog of logo wear courtesy of Land's End. We have a brand store at Land's End at this link.
Anything in the catalog can have our logo embroidered on it. The logo uses black lettering by default, so if you're buying a dark color, be careful to change "needle no. 5" color from black to white, and the logo will stand out from the dark color.
(The bridge club does not benefit from purchases from the store, other than the privilege of having our logo seen on your shirt or jacket!)
Classes This Week
Our classes are best in the context of a full course, but they also stand alone very nicely. If you can't take a full course, you can always drop in for a single class on any topic for $25.
Here are this week's individual classes:
- Wednesday 3:00 PM Bridge Basics 3 - Popular Conventions "Slam Bidding"
- Wednesday 7:00 PM Introduction to Defense "Signaling against trump contracts"
- Thursday 7:00 PM Two Over One Game Force "Practice Hands"
The Saturday morning 9:30 workshop is on as usual, with another great hand from Eddie Kantar's Thinking Bridge series. (Attend the workshop for free, even if you don't play in that morning's game!)
Coming up ...
This weekend there's a local sectional in nearby Upland. They have a great three-day schedule! Here's the flier for the tournament.
Zachary and I have (finally!) had a couple of chances to play together as partners during the Saturday afternoon game, calling back to the promotional games from the Bridge Center in Arcadia -- "Beat The House" nights. Art and Diane would play as partners, and any pair boasting a better game score percentage would earn a free play to a future game.
We're going to give that a try at a future Saturday afternoon game, and may make it a regular feature. It'll be unannounced at the moment, since we'll only play if there's a half table in the game!
If we have a really bad game that day (oh yes, that happens!) it could mean free plays for the room. :)
Best regards
Mojo, Jane, Zachary, Lisa, Susan
